• Looking for a New Job? Think Outside the Box!

Career Consultant Chloe Brassey offers exclusive advice on developing your job search.

“Think outside the box, collapse the box, and take a sharp knife to it” Banksy

There’s no doubt that 2020 has been a hard year for job hunters. As a career coach I have witnessed the struggle first-hand. However – if you think outside the box when navigating the job market, you will definitely INCREASE YOUR CHANCE OF SUCCESS. Are you a graduate? Have you been made redundant? Do you dream of a career change? I can help!

Here are my top ‘thinking outside the box’ tips:

    USE YOUR INITIATIVE

Instead of waiting for jobs to come to you – go to them. Draft a list of companies that you would like to work for and research the most appropriate person to send your CV and a short covering letter to. This letter should explain why you want to work for them and how you would be a valuable asset.

LEVERAGE ON YOUR EXISTING PROFESSIONAL NETWORK

Share with your LinkedIn network that you are looking for a new job or embarking on a career change. You’ll be surprised by the positive reaction you will receive. Recently I have seen a lot of people on my LinkedIn feed sharing an honest account of why they are looking for a job, what they are looking for and asking for help or recommendations.

    BE INNOVATIVE

One of my favourite tips as a career coach is to create a short video of yourself explaining who you are, what your skillset is and why a potential employer should hire you. Then post it on LinkedIn or email it to your network.

    BROADEN YOUR SEARCH

Search far and wide for jobs online. From the usual sites like LinkedIn, Monster and Indeed to Gumtree and Escape the City.

REACH OUT TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Your personal network should not be overlooked when looking for a new job or a career change. As a career counsellor I always encourage my clients to explore every avenue.

    UTILISE PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITIES

Join online communities or relevant member groups to engage with professionals in relevant industries for your job search.
